Garriage

Hm, maybe the gay rights movement should just let the straighties keep their "marriage" and fight to adopt "garriage" into the Constitution instead. That could be fun. And church manuals and past talks say nothing of sexual relations being OK between garried people, so no sweat on the Church's part to have to clarify what kind of marriage is chaste, right? Adoption agencies can still choose to adopt out only to married couples if they want. And churches can marry or garry to their hearts' content. I think this has potential...

So, in a garrage, do you have gusbands and gifes?

As a parent, when children were fighting over some toy, the solution was often to take it away so that nobody could have it. Perhaps that's what we ought to do with marriage - just have civil union for both same sex and opposite sex couples and get the government out of the marriage business altogether.

Amen, Abelard! If marriage is a sacred union, what sense does it make letting the secular government mess with it??

A.J.'s right, "garriage" is how you pronounce "garage" in the UK and some of its former colonies. An unfortunate coincidence that may hamper an interesting idea.

On a more serious note, I think Abe's "perhaps what we ought to do" really is the best solution. The Church has gotten on quite peaceably with this kind of legal process in numerous other countries for a long time, why not in the US too.
